Talent Spotlight: Raphaël Rockus

One of the true joys of making My Demon Girlfriend was getting the opportunity to work with a really talented musician for the musical score. His name is Raphaël Rockus and he hails from the little village of Alleur, near the city of Liège in Belgium.

I asked him to tell us a little bit about himself and here’s what he had to say: Raphaël Rockus

When I was 12, I saw three schoolmates playing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

It was such a shock that I bought my first electric guitar one week later. I started to learn by ear but it didn’t work out that well. My parents paid for only three guitar lessons because they found it too expensive. Since then I’ve learned almost everything by myself. I quickly started the piano maybe two years later and then the lapsteel, the bluegrass mandolin, bass, drums, accordion, sound libraries, etc…

Most of the time I perform every part of the score which gives a huge pressure, a great understanding and a complete control over the final result.

I like every form of music and I like to try many styles. As a film music composer I particularly like to build an orchestral tune piece by piece.

I’m relatively new in this area. I’ve only been writing for films since January 2013.

Before that I played for five years in a pop band, co-writing songs, so I am also able to write straight to the point.

I always want to create something accessible and memorable.

Well he certainly created a memorable musical score for My Demon Girlfriend. In fact some of the sequences depended on the music for them to work. Well done, Raphaël!
